Summary0006252: A Big Thank You & 9 Feature Requests to Make SOGo a 10/10 (PWA Sessions, UI Tweaks, and Workflow)
Description

Dear SOGo Team,

I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts and express my immense gratitude. Together with Mailcow, I have found something truly exceptional in SOGo. Thanks to your work, I now host all my emails on my private server and only use AppleMail/iCloud for receiving and sending, without storing any data there. I’ve tested many solutions (Betterbird on Linux, Nextcloud, and several commercial competitors), but SOGo fulfills almost all my wishes. You are currently a solid 9/10 for me!

I want to highlight a crucial advantage that makes SOGo a major player in my eyes: the perfect web-based experience. I run SOGo and Mailcow on a uGreen 6011pro (2x2TB SSDs) via Docker/VMs, with a secondary NAS as a backup in another apartment. My whole family accesses our self-hosted apps securely via Wireguard. We use a wide variety of devices—from a 12-year-old notebook to an 8-year-old smartphone and various iPads. We access SOGo purely through the web interface (organized via a Homarr dashboard).
The greatest benefit? Zero data is stored on the local devices. Everything is accessed centrally, updates are managed in one place, and privacy is fully protected. It runs incredibly fast and flawlessly across all devices. Amazing job!

To make SOGo a perfect 10/10 for my family and me, I have a few feature requests. It would be fantastic if some of these could be implemented, perhaps as optional toggles for those who want them:

Global Search by Default: I would love an option to search all folders and messages by default, without having to manually switch the search scope every time.

Persistent Mobile Sessions (PWA): We use SOGo as a bookmark on our iPhone home screens. Currently, we have to log in with our password multiple times a day. In the age of Progressive Web Apps, a "Remember me" token (e.g., for 7 or 30 days) is essential for a smooth mobile experience.

Mobile Layout Tweaks: I've noticed a few minor layout bugs and inconsistencies when using SOGo on a mobile browser.

Keyboard Shortcuts / Fast Archive: Archiving an email currently takes about 5 clicks (Move -> Move to -> Account -> Scroll down -> Archive). A quick shortcut or a 1-click button to move emails directly to the Archive would be a huge workflow improvement.

Collapsible Left Sidebar: The left sidebar (Inbox and folders) takes up quite a bit of space, even though my folder names are short. It would be great to be able to shrink it or collapse it into a narrow strip of icons, rather than hiding the entire bar completely.

Auto-Add Contacts on Reply: If I reply to someone, it would be highly practical if their email address was automatically added to my contacts so they appear in auto-complete the next time I compose a message.

Inline Media Previews: It would be great to view PDF attachments, photos, or play audio files directly in the browser beneath the email text, without having to download them first.

Contact Photos in Mail View: If I have a photo assigned to a contact in the address book, it would be visually helpful to see that photo next to their emails in the mailbox.

AI Integration: As a forward-looking feature, optional AI tools (e.g., to translate emails into other languages or summarize long threads) would be amazing.

Thank you again for your hard work and for providing such an outstanding piece of software!

Best regards,
Paul

Additional Information

Deutsche Version:

Überschrift: Ein großes Dankeschön & 9 Feature-Wünsche, die SOGo zu einer 10/10 machen (PWA Sessions, UI-Anpassungen und Workflow)

Liebes SOGo-Team,

Paul

Auto-Add Contacts on Reply

This already exists. Just set it in "Preferences" --> "Mail" --> "GENERAL" Option "When sending email, add unknown recipients to my".
You have to activate that option and choose the address book you want those addresses to be added to.

Why aren't these showing up for me?
The filters aren't working for me either. Everything ends up in my Inbox.

Could it be because I've set up my domain to point to Apple and I access my emails there in Apple Mail? I retrieve them entirely from that server and keep everything private on my own server.

It is there.
Check the second picture at the bottom. In German it is called '"Unbekannte Empfänger meiner E-Mails hinzufügen zu".
Just activate it by clicking on the rectangle (which will set a tick). Then choose the address book to use.

For Filter "not working".
A) does the chosen folder still exist?
B) Did you store your filter with the floppy disk symbol on the green circle?
C) Does your IMAP server has SIEVE enabled?
D) Does your IMAP server have managesieve enabled?
E) Does your filter add the matching emails to the chosen folder and the INBOX?
F) Do you get an error on storing your filter?

Thank you, I found the address book option.

Regarding the filters, here are the answers to your questions:
A) Yes, the folder exists.
B) Yes, the filter is saved.
C) and D) Yes. This is mailcow (Dovecot/Pigeonhole). Sieve and ManageSieve are
enabled and allowed for my mailbox.
E) No, the filter only moves the message to the folder (fileinto, no keep).
F) No error when saving.

I found the cause, and it is not a SOGo bug. A test mail delivered locally was
filtered correctly. My regular mails are not delivered via SMTP/LMTP: a mailcow
sync job (imapsync) copies them from iCloud into my INBOX via IMAP and deletes
them at the source. Sieve never runs for these messages.

As a workaround I can run Dovecot's sieve-filter tool manually with the script
that SOGo saved, and it moves the matching messages correctly:

sieve-filter -e -W -u <user> /var/vmail/sieve/<user>.sieve INBOX

Two questions:
1) Do you have a recommendation for mailboxes that are filled by imapsync?
2) Could SOGo offer a "run filters now" action for a folder, similar to
Thunderbird? That would solve this for users without shell access.

One more finding about my wish no. 2 (staying logged in on the phone): in my
setup the login goes through the mailcow web UI, and its session cookie had no
lifetime, so iOS dropped it after a few hours. I have set a cookie lifetime
there and am testing it now. This may be a mailcow matter rather than a SOGo one.

Thanks again for your help.
Paul

Hello Christian,

thank you again for your help. I have a short update on two points, and both turned out not to be SOGo bugs.

  1. Sieve filters

The filters I create in SOGo are saved correctly on the server. They were simply never triggered, because of how mail arrives on my system: a mailcow sync job (imapsync) copies the messages from my external provider into the INBOX via IMAP. Sieve only runs on SMTP/LMTP delivery, so mail copied in via IMAP never passes through the filter.

As a workaround I added a small cron job on the mailcow host (/etc/cron.d/sieve-filter). Every two minutes it runs Dovecot's sieve-filter tool against the INBOX, using the same Sieve script that SOGo writes:

/2 * root flock -n /run/sieve-filter.lock docker exec mailcowdockerized-dovecot-mailcow-1 sieve-filter -e -W -u user@example.com /var/vmail/sieve/user@example.com.sieve INBOX > /var/log/sieve-filter.log 2>&1

With this in place, the filters from SOGo are applied successfully, with a delay of up to two minutes. One limitation: every run evaluates all messages in the INBOX again, so the rules should only move messages (fileinto) and not copy or redirect them.

  1. Session on mobile

I was being logged out on my phone very quickly. The cause was on the mailcow side: the server-side session lifetime was set to 14 days, but the session cookie had no lifetime, so it only lasted until the browser closed the page. On the iPhone that happens quickly in the background.

I added one line to data/web/inc/vars.local.inc.php that sets session.cookie_lifetime to the same value as $SESSION_LIFETIME (1209600 seconds). The server now sends the cookie with Max-Age=1209600, and on my phone it seems to work so far.

I hope this is useful in case other mailcow users report the same behaviour. Thank you for your time and for your work on SOGo.

Kind regards,
Paul
